Hashbrown Casserole

Hashbrown Casserole - Simple Food Dishes

Growing up, Sunday mornings meant one thing: the aroma of breakfast wafting from the kitchen. My mom always made something special. And while pancakes and waffles had their moment, the star was often hashbrown casserole.
A cozy dish featuring shredded potatoes, creamy sauce, and gooey cheese, it was comfort food in its truest form. Whenever I ate it, I felt warmth spreading from my stomach to my heart.
What’s intriguing about this dish is its versatility. It’s not just confined to breakfast or brunch. Hashbrown casserole can easily make an appearance at dinner parties, family get-togethers, or even holiday feasts.
The best part? Anyone can whip it up with minimal fuss. Let’s dive deep into what makes this dish so special.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded, divided
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 bag frozen shredded hash brown potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 cups full-fat sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 can creamy chicken soup
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Method

Step 1: Preheat Your Oven
  1. Start off by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. This ensures that when your casserole is ready to bake, it will cook evenly and perfectly.
Step 2: Prepare Your Ingredients
  1. While the oven is warming up, gather all your ingredients. Shred the cheese if it’s not pre-shredded. Finely dice the onion, and have everything within easy reach.
Step 3: Combine the Ingredients
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the frozen hash browns, half of the cheddar cheese, melted butter, sour cream, creamy chicken soup, diced onion, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Use a spatula or spoon to mix everything thoroughly.
Make sure every shredded potato is coated in the creamy goodness.
Step 4: Transfer to a Baking Dish
  1. Next, grab a 9x13 inch baking dish. Lightly grease it with cooking spray or butter. Pour the hashbrown mixture into the prepared dish, spreading it evenly.
Step 5: Top with Cheese
  1. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top of the casserole. This will create a gorgeous, melty layer that adds flavor as it bakes. Trust me, the extra cheese takes this dish to the next level.
Step 6: Bake It
  1. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and pop it into your preheated oven. Bake for about 45 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and the top is golden brown.
You’ll want to keep an eye on it during this stage; the smell alone will test your patience!
Step 7: Let It Cool
  1. Once the casserole is out of the oven, let it sit for about 10-15 minutes before serving. This resting period helps the dish set, making it easier to scoop.

Notes

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh ingredients can make even an easy dish feel gourmet. If you have fresh potatoes, feel free to shred them instead.
  • Cheese Variations: Experiment with different cheeses like Monterey Jack or pepper jack for a spicy twist.
  • Add Vegetables: Consider adding veggies like chopped bell peppers, zucchini, or spinach to include more nutrients.
  • Spice It Up: A pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes can introduce an unexpected kick.
  • Make it Ahead: Assemble the casserole a day ahead and store it in the fridge. Just pop it in the oven when you’re ready!
