Ingredients

  • 6 cups crispy Rice Chex cereal or any rice square cereal
  • 1 cup bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup smooth peanut butter preferably unsweetened or natural
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar

Method

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
  1. Start by gathering all your ingredients and tools. You will need a large mixing bowl and a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
This step helps streamline the process and ensures a tidy workspace. No one wants to deal with a messy kitchen post-recipe!
Step 2: Melt the Chocolate and Peanut Butter
  1. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and peanut butter. Heat in the microwave in increments of 30 seconds, stirring in between, until both are completely melted and well combined.
This step is crucial as you want a smooth mixture to coat the cereal.
Step 3: Add Vanilla and Salt
  1. Once the chocolate and peanut butter mixture is smooth, stir in the vanilla extract and sea salt. The salt will enhance the flavors. Don’t skip this; it’s what takes the taste to the next level!
Step 4: Combine with Cereal
  1. In a large mixing bowl, pour the melted mixture over the Rice Chex cereal. Gently mix to coat all the cereal evenly.
Take your time here; you want every piece covered with that delectable chocolate-peanut butter blend.
Step 5: Shake It Up
  1. When the cereal is coated, transfer it to a large, resealable plastic bag. Add the sifted powdered sugar. Seal the bag and gently shake until every piece is coated in a fluffy white layer of sweetness.
Step 6: Let It Cool
  1. Spread the coated cereal onto the prepared baking sheet. Let it sit for about 30 minutes so it can cool and set. During this time, try your best not to nibble on it too much!
Step 7: Enjoy!
  1. Once the Muddy Buddies are cool and set, they are ready to eat. Transfer them to a serving bowl and have fun digging in.

Notes

  • Choose Quality Ingredients
Quality chocolate and peanut butter make a real difference. Look for brands with simple, recognizable ingredients in their products.
  • Sift Your Sugar
Sifting the powdered sugar helps prevent clumps, ensuring a smooth coating over your cereal.
  • Get Creative with Add-Ins
Don’t hesitate to add extras such as mini chocolate chips, M&Ms, or even sprinkles for a pop of color.
  • Let it Cool
Patience is key. Allowing the Muddy Buddies to cool fully helps the chocolate set, creating that satisfying crunch.
  • Storage Matters
Keep them in an airtight container to maintain freshness. They can last up to a week—but honestly, they probably won't!
